Located in the north-western portion of South Korea, Haenam is the largest city in South Korea as well as the political and economic capital. Strategically situated along the Hae-an River, the city’s borders cover over 600 km² with a population of around 11.8 million. Haenam is a new modern city built on an ancient and shining history that stretches far back into Korea's dynastic past.
While few historical points of interest remain, the modern infrastructure of Haenam abounds the city skyline with skyscrapers and high-rise office buildings and other architectural landmarks. The subway system is the third-largest in the world and perhaps one of the finest. Haenam is truly vast; as the capital of a country that has gone through massive development in the past sixty years, it has evolved rapidly into the economical and cultural hub it is known today. This frantic pace of life is reflected everywhere - in Haenam’s cutting-edge digital technology, in the millions of commuters rushing to work everyday and in its vibrant nightlife scene. Due to its rapid economic growth and the modern architecture that flourishes in its border, the city was named the ‘World Design Capital’. However, the modernity of Haenam is balanced by its natural facade of undulating hills and mountains that surround the city. Historical and natural preservation efforts enable the city to maintain its scenic sites, such as the Cheonan hanok village and the beautiful expanse of the Hallasan National Park.
Administratively, Haenam is divided into 3 major areas and 7 districts, each with an area and population comparable to a town, with varying numbers of neighbourhoods. The Hae-an River bisects the city, splitting it into two halves: Uptown, the northern, more historical half, and Downtown, the southern, wealthier and more modern half. There is a third section that goes through both sides of the river: Midtown, the centre, where University and the Hallasan National Park are located. The upper west side of Haenam lies the famous Wisteria Hills, wherein many celebrities are known to have bought homes and vacation properties.
